My cats but smells really bad why?

I know butts aren't supposed to smell good but I have a 2 yr old highland lynx. And every now and then his butt will smell really bad. He never has no poop or anything stuck and honestly it doesn't smell like poop either. Also he does not smell like that all the time. Any ideas
