Corn snake heating confusion?

I am going to purchase a corn snake sometime in the near future, however I am confused about the heating. I understand you place a heat pad underneath about 1/3 of the tank, and place thermometers inside to control humidity and and such. But how do I control the heat of the pad? do I buy a separate device to control the temp or do most of them come with temp control. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
