I really, really want to be a singer. I know I have a good singing voice, but I don't know where to start?

I really don't know where to start in terms of singing and getting noticed. I'd need to find a producer, sound booth, make some tracks and go to top label HQ and ask to speak to someone about my music. The thing is, I don't know where to find any of this stuff. I am writing songs, but I just don't know where to start my music career. See, I sing more R'n'B type songs, therefore I probably only appeal to a certain audience. I don't particularly want to go on a talent based show, just because it's kind of "desperate" and I would like to work my way to the top with little help in terms of publicity/media influence like a lot of talent show artists. Please, I need some advice?
