Are pronouns a type of noun?

Don't give me the "it has 'noun' in it's name, of course it's a noun,' bit. If that were true, corn on the cob would be corn kernerls served on swan meat, home plate would be a round thing for eating supper on when at home, and a commencement would be a ceremony honoring the beginning of a person's schooling instead of the end.
